The national WorldSkills South Africa (WSSA) competition took place in Durban from 12 to 17 February 2017, where young artisans competed in 26 trades, including HVAC&R, for a spot to go to Abu Dhabi in October. The contestants had to build a mini ice rink, operating with glycol as secondary refrigerant and R134a as primary refrigerant.
The top three contestants had all been trained at the Open Trade Training Centre (OTTC),
and they finished in the following order:
Gold medal: Tyrone Claude Bunce (Standard Refrigeration in KwaZulu-Natal).
Silver medal: Lionald Wooldridge (Penguin Refrigeration in Vryburg).
Bronze medal: Valentim Jorge Valente (Penguin Refrigeration in Vryburg).
We are requesting the WorldSkills community join together to celebrate and promote WYSD, demonstrating the reach of our global community. Whether it is hosting your own local event or activities, and sharing our #SkillsRuleTheWorld campaign with your supporters, each of you can help bring global awareness to this important day.
As we released the WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 Final Report and Video, the Secretariat and WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 teams were preparing for our latest planning meetings in Abu Dhabi. The signing of the MoU at the EmiratesSkills National Competition marked 520 days until the Opening Ceremonies of the 44th WorldSkills Competition.
